Review: The Black Hood #1
THE BLACK HOOD #1 by Duane Swierczynski and Michael Gaydos
The Black Hood starts the Dark Circle Comics initiative with a bang, almost like a shotgun blast to the face (more on that later, actually). Duane Swierczynski has crafted a multidimensional story that isn’t your typical superhero yarn. It’s also worth mentioning that this book is definitely for mature readers. Contained within is some graphic violence and rather coarse language. None of it feels forced and only adds to the authenticity of the material.
This inaugural issue tells the gripping story of officer Gregory Hettinger, a cop who takes a shotgun blast to the face (I just paid off my opener) while trying to break up a situation near a school. It leads to him killing a man whom he felt didn’t deserve it while operating on pure instinct. His disfigurement leads him to develop an addiction to pain pills, undergo speech therapy, and a crisis of conscience. I was vaguely reminded of The Simpsons episode in which Alan Moore reimagined Radioactive Man as a heroine addicted jazz critic.
The story organically builds to Gregory becoming a vigilante near the end, but it’s quite clear the journey/ downward spiral has only begun. He’s a complicated man (but no one understands him but his speech therapist) and this will no doubt yield a book with much depth.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention Michael Gaydos’ art before I close. It perfectly fits the tone and is somewhat reminiscent of David Mack’s work on Daredevil. Speaking of which, fans of Daredevil, The Punisher, or even Death Wish enthusiasts like myself will want to sample this book. It’s not exactly like those I just mentioned, but I feel that if you enjoy those, this is certainly worth your time and money. If the other Dark Circle books are as good as this, the line certainly has much potential. Score: 9/10

A Podcast For All Seasons: S2E4 – Supernatural
This week, Eric and Josh talk about one of their greatest loves – Supernatural! Favorite episodes are discussed along with the current state of the series and the tie-in comics published by DC.
‘Sonic/ Mega Man: Worlds Unite’ Adds Cavalcade of Classic Characters
“Worlds Unite,” the sequel to the Sonic The Hedgehog/ Mega Man crossover “Worlds Collide,” just got bigger than you could possibly imagine! A horde of characters from beloved Sega and Capcom franchises will also join the fold, most notably Street Fighter. I’d just like to point out that you won’t see Resident Evil characters get in on the action because DC Comics publishes books based on that series.
Here’s what franchises you can expect to see join the fun, per Archie Comics:
Classic SEGA franchises such as “Alex Kidd,” “Billy Hatcher,” “Golden Axe,” “NiGHTS,” “Skies of Arcadia,” and “Panzer Dragoon” will be involved in the world-spanning epic, along with characters from CAPCOM’s popular “Breath of Fire,” ‘Ghosts N’ Goblins,” “Monster Hunter,” “Street Fighter,” “Okami,” and “Viewtiful Joe” series.
“This crossover event is unlike any other you’ve ever seen before,” Archie Comics Executive Director of Editorial Paul Kaminski said. “So sit back, grab a chili dog and an E-Tank, and prepare yourself for the ultimate multi-franchise crossover comic book experience!”
The event kicks off May 2, Free Comic Book Day, in a special free prelude comic. The crossover proper will begin in Sonic Universe #76 and spill over into titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Boom, and Mega Man.

First Photo of Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx in ‘Spectre’; More Set Footage
Thanks to Empire, we have our first looks at Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx and Lea Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann in the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre. Check them out.
Bautista had this to say regarding his villainous role:
“When I came over to meet Sam [Mendes], I only asked two questions,” says the erstwhile Galaxy Guardian. “I asked him if Mr. Hinx was a badass. He said, ‘Yes, he’s a badass.’ I said, ‘Well, is Mr. Hinx intelligent?’ He said, ‘Very.’ That’s what I like about Mr. Hinx. He’s very well-dressed and very well-mannered. I’m not just here to fight people. He has a sense of humour. He definitely knows what a metaphor is.”
And here’s a new video from the set:
Spectre opens in theaters November 6.

A Podcast For All Seasons: S2E3 – Joker Comes to Gotham
This week, Eric and Josh discuss many hot button issues surrounding DC TV shows. Topics covered include: The Joker coming to Gotham, the direction Arrow’s John Diggle is going in, Constantine’s hopeful survival, and a dash of The Flash.
Archie Vol. 1 to End with Issue #666 This June
It’s been known for some time now that Archie will relaunch with a new #1 later this year. Until this week, it had not been clear what the final issue of the original run would be. We can now confirm that Archie will conclude its 70+ year run with issue #666 (cover art can be seen to the left).
Before Mark Waid and Fiona Staples usher in a bold new era, Archie #666 aims to observe Mr. Andrews’ rich history by looking back at stories told by legendary creators such as Tom DeFalco, Dan Parent, Fernando Ruiz, and Pat & Tim Kennedy.
Archie #666 will be made available June 3 and will feature six interlocking covers by Dan Parent. You can check out preliminary cover art below.
