Review: The Black Hood #5
THE BLACK HOOD #5 by Duane Swierczynski and Michael Gaydos
The first arc of Dark Circle Comics’ maiden voyage has come to an end. Despite the fact that I’ve been somewhat critical of this title, I really believe that it read rather well and probably will be even more of a rewarding experience once it’s collected into a trade paperback. Swierczynski and Gaydos have really crafted a satisfying conclusion to the opening arc of their enthralling crime drama.
Much is packed into the final chapter of “The Bullet’s Kiss” (wouldn’t that be a great name for a wrestling move?), chief among which is the reveal of the mysterious Connection. Honestly, the reveal wasn’t exactly a shocker, but it did perfectly connect the puzzle pieces making for a well-rounded story. How our vigilante hero dealt with him was quite unexpected.
It will be interesting to see where they take the character in the future, knowing that he can’t walk away from the hood. I don’t consider that statement to be much of a spoiler, considering this is an ongoing, not a mini-series. If any studios are looking for a comic book property beyond the Big Two to adapt to the big or small screen, especially in the wake of Netflix’s Daredevil, they should look no further than The Black Hood. It seems like a perfect fit for an R-rated outing. Score: 9/10
Hub for Recent Interviews
We have conducted several big interviews in recent memory over at Dark Knight News and DC Comics News. For those who may have missed some, I decided to put together a hub of sorts on this blog. The ones conducted for DKN were done by me as I spoke with Geoff Johns and Gary Frank to promote Batman: Earth One, Volume 2, as well as conversations I had with Michael Rowe (Arrow) and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe (Prison Break) at Motor City Comic Con 2015. On the DCN side of things, my podcast co-host, Josh Mundy, spoke with John Wesley Shipp (The Flash) and staff writer Thomas O’Donnell had the privilege of chatting with Jeff Parker and Evan Shaner to discuss their work on Convergence: Shazam.

Reviews: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #3 & The Black Hood #4
As promised, I’m posting reviews for Archie books that I have received although my days of covering them have come to an end (at least for now). These titles took longer than expected to come through the mail, so I apologize if they seem a bit late – I received them yesterday. Should anymore books be in transit, I promise to review those as well. I must also apologize if these end up being a little more brief than usual, for I have family matters to attend to.
CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA #3 by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack
I guess the “stars are aligning” when it comes to this title and there thankfully wasn’t as large of a gap between the releases of this issue and the previous one. This particular issue wastes no time in moving the story forward: Sabrina is about to turn sixteen and it’s time that she prepare for her unholy baptism and become a fully realized witch. There are, obviously, some complications.
Madam Satan remains an unknown thorn in Sabrina’s side and conspires against her, interfering in the ceremony and her love life at once. She also likes to show way too much cleavage for a schoolteacher. Perhaps a young David Lee Roth was among her students and was inspired to one day write “Hot for Teacher.”
Anyway, the baptism gets quite surreal and we’re left with the best cliffhanger yet in the series. Robert Hack’s art is once again a highlight and maybe it’s just me, but I found his coloring to be more distinctive than ever. A reprint of Madam Satan’s second appearance is included as supplemental material.
I didn’t feel this issue was as strong as the first two, but it’s moving the narrative along rather nicely and those who are already invested in the series would be well advised to pick up this one as well. Score: 8.5/10
THE BLACK HOOD #4 by Duane Swierczynski and Michael Gaydos
This installment happens to be the penultimate chapter of the opening arc. It contains several huge developments and shows the many consequences of being a vigilante. Seriously, it’s about as realistic and visceral as it gets. This series has had its ups and downs (at least in my view), but is still an entertaining read. Score: 7.5/10
This song was stuck in my head while reading the latest issue of Sabrina. I’ve decided to share it as I sometimes feel compelled to.
Announcement Concerning Archie Coverage
I regret to inform readers of this blog that I will be ceasing coverage of Archie Comics products. My increased responsibilities at Dark Knight News and DC Comics News, along with matters in my personal life, have led to this decision. Should I receive any books for review in the next week, I will still post reviews for them here. For those still looking for Archie news, stay tuned to the Facebook page for A Podcast For All Seasons, as we will post links to stories from reputable websites over there.
